Nagoya Castle
Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture
Nagoya Castle was built in 1612 by Tokugawa Ieyasu for his son Yoshinao. The castle was one of the largest and most sophisticated of the Edo-period and was famous for its gold dolphins atop its gables. Unfortunately, the castle was destroyed during bombing raids in 1945 but was rebuilt in 1959. The structure that stands today is a concrete reproduction that has an observatory on its top floor and exhibits about the castle.
