Japan -> Kurashiki -> Ohashi House
Ohashi House
Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture
The Ohashi House is the former residence of the Ohashi family, the most prominent family among the merchant class of Kurashiki. The house was built in 1796 and is typical of the machiya (town house) of their status. The house has beautiful sliding doors and tatami floors. Usually machiya are built directly on the road but this one has a front gate and courtyard area, a style exclusive to samurai homes. During the Edo-period, a strict caste system was in place with samurai at the top and merchants at the bottom. The Ohashi's use of samurai residence style is indicative of their local status.
