Japan -> Kamakura -> Kencho-ji Temple
Kencho-ji Temple
Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture
Kencho-ji Temple is the most important of the "five great" Zen temples in Kamakura, and is the oldest Zen training monastery in Japan. It was founded in 1253 by a Chinese Zen master and is currently the headquarters of the Rinzai sect. The great bronze bell cast in 1255 is a National Treasure. The Buddha Hall contains, not a Buddha, but a Jizobosatsu, a savior of the souls of the dead. Most of the buildings we destroyed by fires, but ten subtemples remain.
