Kamakura is a seaside town, bordered on three sides by wooded mountains, and on the fourth by the Pacific Ocean. Kamakura was the capital of Japan from 1192 when it became the headquarters of the first shogunate, until 1333 when it was taken over by imperial forces. Impressive temples and artworks were commissioned during this time and much of it remains today. The town suffered from a massive earthquake in 1923, and was spared from bombing during WWII. Kamakura is a must-see when visiting Japan for its rich history and preserved treasures.
