Japan -> Yokohama
Kanagawa Prefecture

Yokohama is Japan's second largest city and largest port. It has been a center of trading, shipping, and foreign influence since 1858 when it was one of the first ports opened to outsiders. By the early 1900s, it was the largest port in Asia until the 1923 Kanto earthquake that wiped out 95% of the city. 40,000 people lost their lives, and then half the city was destroyed by World War II bombing. Yokohama became a base for US soldiers after the war and the port again rose to prominence by the 1970s. Take a ride to the 69th to see the view from the Landmark Tower, Japan's tallest building in Minato Mirai 21. The Yokohama Maritime Museum is a good place to learn about shipping in Japan and its silk trade at the Silk Museum. Yokohama boasts one of the largest Chinatown's in Japan where you can shop for everyday items, medicine, or grab a bite to eat.
