Niigata is the most important coastal city on the Sea of Japan but typically serves as the gateway to Sado-ga-shima. The island is one of Japan's largest, covering 330sq miles (855sq km) and is separated from the mainland by a treacherous 22mi long strait. Medieval warlords would send their enemies into exile here to prevent them from becoming martyrs. In 1601 the SadoKinzan Gold Mine was founded and flourished during the Edo period. Visitors flock here in spring and summer to partake in the islands endless outdoor activities like hiking, camping, swimming, cycling, hot springs, and dining on delicious seafood. There are also many secluded temples to visit as well as fishing villages.
