Japan -> Kobe
Hyogo Prefecture

Kobe has a long history of prosperous trade, starting in the 8th century with China and Korea. This trade increased exponentially when Kobe was opened to Western trade in 1868 as one of Japan's first treaty ports. This exposed Kobe to foreign influence, mostly from Chinese and Koreans, but also Americans, Europeans, and Indians, who are all a significant part of the expatriate community. Today, Kobe handles the largest volume of cargo in Japan, making it the sixth largest port in the world. Though Kobe also became known for a devastating earthquake in 1995, the city rebuilt itself so efficiently that there hardly remains any indication of the disaster. Kobe's downtown is famous for its nightlife but the city is known worldwide for its famous Kobe beef, the world's most expensive meat.
