Japan -> TOKYO -> Zoshigaya Cemetery
Zoshigaya Cemetery
TOKYO, Tokyo Prefecture
Zoshigaya Cemetery was founded by the local government in 1874 as a public graveyard where people from any religion may be buried. The area was once an estate where the shogun kept his kennels and where his falconers lived. The cemetery contains graves of several famous Japanese including NatsumeSoseki, one of Japan's best loved novelists, Nakahama "John" Manjiro, the first Japanese to visit the US, and Kyoka Izumi, novelist and playwright. These graves can all be found by requesting a map from the cemetery caretaker. Not marked on the map is the grave of Hideki Tojo, the Prime Minister of Japan credited with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, who was hanged for war crimes after World War II.
