Japan -> TOKYO -> Ueno
Ueno
TOKYO, Tokyo Prefecture
The town of Ueno is an interesting contrast to nearby Tokyo with its vintage shops and restaurants sitting next to a seedy entertainment area. The city is full of old historical places, and old shabby places. The area is famous as being the site of the last great battle of Japan in 1868 when the Tokugawa shogunate fell to Emperor Meiji's forces. Ueno and Asakusa are what remains of Tokyo's famed old Shitamachi (low city) which have been the subject of many woodblock prints. The area still attracts numbers of poor farmers who congregate here in the winter months looking for work. The Ameyoko market (Candy Store Alley) is an interesting stop as it is the same black market that thrived in the immediate postwar period. The market was so named for the hawkers who sold contraband goods, mostly US made, and fronted as candy stores. Most people gather in Ueno-koen Park to relax and partake in flower viewing of the cherry blossoms and plum trees.
