Roppongi
TOKYO, Tokyo Prefecture
The Roppongi district began as a conglomeration of foreign embassies in the 1950s and as a result, developed into a residential area for expatriates. In the 70s it was known for its discos and in the 80s for its fashion. Today it is known for its music and club scene, as well as foreign restaurants and the hub of Western entertainment. The area can seem tacky at times with its over-the-top clubs and restaurants but it is still the place to come to for 'the best'. The public walkways, pedestrian squares, art galleries, and shops of all kinds gives the area a feeling of a 'city within a city,' as was meant by the Roppongi Hills development.
