Odaiba    TOKYO, Tokyo Prefecture

Odaiba island was originally built as a fort to defend Edo Bay from foreign invasion in the 1850s. Odaiba gets its name from the daiba (obstructions) that the shogunate constructed to keep the foreigner's "black ships" out of the bay. After massive development in the 1980s, the island is now a unique mix of amusement parks, restaurants, museums, shopping, and the world's largest Ferris wheel. The island is also home to the über-futuristic Fuji Television Building, designed by KenzoTange who also designed the Tokyo Metropolitan Government House. The Museum of Maritime Science is also located on the island. The island is best accessed via the Yurikamome monorail which crosses the Rainbow Bridge over Tokyo Harbor.
