Tokyo National Museum
TOKYO, Tokyo Prefecture
The Tokyo National Museum in Ueno Park houses the best collection of Japanese art in the world with over 110,000 items. The Main Building (Honkan) has 25 rooms devoted to Japanese art including sculpture, metalwork, ceramics, armor, textiles, painting, calligraphy, and lacquerware. The Gallery of East Asian Art and Antiquities (Toyokan) has nine rooms that exhibit non-Japanese Eastern art, mostly from China and Korea. The Heiseikan Gallery is devoted to Japanese archaeology, prehistoric pottery, and early Buddhist art. Finally, the Gallery of Horyu-ji Treasures (Horyu-jiHomotsukan) is home to a collection of 318 treasures donated to the imperial family from the Horyu-ji Temple near Nara. This building is only open on Thursdays and is closed if the weather is humid or raining due to the extreme fragility of the items. Of the entire collection, 84 items are considered National Treasures and 521 Important Cultural Properties.
