Meiji-jingu Shrine    TOKYO, Tokyo Prefecture

Tokyo's greatest shrine, the Meiji-jingu Shrine was built in 1920 and is where Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken are enshrined. Emperor Meiji was the pivotal ruler who saw Japan change from feudal to modern. The copper tiled roof and plain cypress wood of the shrine was destroyed during WWII bombing but was rebuilt to exact specifications in 1958 by private donations. The main pathway leading to the shrine is lined with camphor trees leading to a giant cypress torii. Over three million people worship here and nearly one million visit for the New Year holidays.
