Marunouchi was nicknamed "Gambler's Meadow" during the Edo period for its isolated location making it an ideal place to gamble in secret. During the Meiji period it was used by the army, who then sold it to Mitsubishi in 1890. The introduction of the railway increased business to the area and Tokyo Station was built in 1914. The brick station is based on the design of Amsterdam station.
