Japan -> Okayama -> Okayama Castle
Okayama Castle
Okayama, Okayama Prefecture
Okayama Castle was originally built in 1573 in the city's heart but was carefully rebuilt in 1966 after being destroyed by WWII bombing. The castle was painted black and nicknamed 'U-jo', Cormorant Castle, in contrast to the White Egret Castle in Himeji. The moon-viewing turret is the only original structure but the reconstruction is very realistic. The interior houses a museum of samurai history with armor, weapons, and lacquerware. Paddleboats shaped like teacups and swans are available for rent in the river below the castle.
