Japan -> Nara -> Nara National Museum
Nara National Museum
Nara, Nara Prefecture
The Nara National Museum (Kokuritsu Hakubutsukan) was built in 1875 and contains an impressive collection dating back to the Nara and Heian periods in the 7th century. Some of the items on display are Buddhist art, calligraphy, sculptures, and paintings. The modern annex was built in 1973 and houses special exhibitions including treasures from the Shoso-in, a storehouse of Emperor Shomu's private collection. There are over 9,000 objects in the Shoso-in collection, some with Persian and Central Asian origin showing the influence on Nara from the Silk Road. Some of these items are so fragile that they are only on display once a year.
