Japan -> Nara -> Kasuga Taisha Shrine
Kasuga Taisha Shrine
Nara, Nara Prefecture
The Kasuga Taisha Shrine was founded by the ruler Fujiwara-no-Michinaga in 768 as a family shrine. There are four main halls, three of which are dedicated to divine warriors, and the last to deified Fujiwara ancestors. The temple was built in the Chinese style, and other temples in Japan with red pillars and sweeping roofs are described as being in the "Kasuga-style." The shrine entrance is lined with over 2,000 stone lanterns donated by worshippers since the 11th century. A thousand more, made from bronze, hang from the buildings themselves. Twice a year the lanterns are lit for a spectacular festival.
