Japan -> Nara -> Nara-koen Deer Park
Nara-koen Deer Park
Nara, Nara Prefecture
The 1,300 acres of the Nara-koen Deer Park are home to about 1,500 tame deer that roam freely on the grounds. The park is the largest city park in Japan and home to most of Nara's temples. The deer inhabited these lands long before the Japanese, having crossed land bridges during the ice age. According to the Shinto, deer are believed to be messengers of the gods and stalls are on hand everywhere to supply you with deer food. Don't mistake the deer crackers for local delicacies, though, as many foreigners do!
