Shopping
Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture
Kyoto has a long history of catering to upper class tastes so finding good quality food and crafts is a walk in the park. The Nishiki Market Alley is the best place to shop for food items as it is where all of Kyoto's chefs come to shop. You can find all sorts of ingredients unique to Kyoto cuisine all the way to Japanese knives and kitchen utensils. There are plenty of department stores and arcades - be sure to check out the 'food courts' in the basements. The Gion District is another place to find shops with expensive kimono accessories. If you are interested in buying washi, handmade paper, you will find it at the Morita WashiWagami-nomise. Kawaramachi is another area to find all sorts of souvenirs and trinkets. Don't forget that almost any road leading to a temple will also be lined with shopping stalls.
