            | Japan -> Kyoto -> Nijo Castle Nijo Castle

							Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture

Built in 1603, the Nijo Castle, lacking the impressive fortifications of other Japanese castles, is best known for its uncommonly ornate interiors and its 'nightingale floors', that would 'chirp' when walked upon to warn of possible intruders. The castle was meant more as a palatial residence for the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. The castle suffered damage from fires, other ruling powers, and contempt for anything from Japan's feudal past. The castle was restored, however, when it became the home for Prince Katsura in 1893.
