Kyoto National Museum
Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture
The Kyoto National Museum was founded in 1895 by the Imperial Household Agency and was the home for the emperor's own art and relic collection. These works, including Buddhist and ink paintings, textiles, Heian-period sculptures, and handicrafts were later passed on to the city. There are about 2,000 exhibits in 17 rooms, with nearly 230 items listed as Important Cultural Properties or National Treasures.
