Kiyomizu-dera Temple    Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture

Kiyomizu-dera Temple was built in 798 is dedicated to the 11-headed Kannon deity, but the temple seems to belong to everyone. The temple is named after the sacred spring that flows nearby. The main hall is a National Treasure and was miraculously made without any nails. The hall, which is perched atop a cliff, is the origin of the Japanese expression "to jump off Kiyomizu's stage" - the equivalent of the American "to take the plunge". Love charms can be purchased at a small shrine on the north side of the temple.
