Japan -> Kyoto -> Kinkaku-ji Temple
Kinkaku-ji Temple
Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture
Kinkaku-ji Temple, the Golden Pavilion, is one of the most famous sights in Japan and one of the most beautiful. The pavilion belonged to the third Ashikaga shogun, Yoshimitsu who turned it into his golden retirement villa in 1397. He had relinquished his official duties to enter the priesthood at age 37, but he held on to his power. Upon his death, he wished the home to be turned into a temple with Soseki, a Zen priest Yoshimitsu followed fervently, as the head. His wishes were granted, but the temple was destroyed by arson in 1950 by a deranged monk. The temple was rebuilt in 1955 as an exact replica. The temple is especially beautiful when the surrounding trees change color in autumn.
