Kyoto Imperial Palace    Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture

The original Kyoto Imperial Palace was built in 794 by emperor Kammu until it was destroyed by fire in 1788. A new palace was constructed and finished, only to be burned to the ground again in 1854. A year later, the current smaller palace was built southeast of its original site and can be seen today. It is still used for imperial enthronement ceremonies and is known for the complete simplicity of its grand structures. A sense of grandeur is not lost due to its lack of ornate decorations.
