Higashi Hongan-ji Temple
Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture
The Higashi Hongan-ji was built in 1602 and stands as a testament to the power and popularity of the Jodo-Shinshu sect. Ironically though, the founder of the temple was a renegade abbot who left the Jodo-Shinshu sect to form a rival school in the Higashi Hongan-ji Temple. The temple was burned down in a fire and reconstructed in 1895. The founder's hall, Goei-do, claims to be the largest wooden structure in the world, certainly Kyoto.
